About the event

Today's young workers are a crucial workforce as our population ages and labour shortages increase. Those entering and moving through working life today will shoulder more, not less, of the burden of keeping our economy and communities functioning.

Yet, in the last few years we’ve seen skyrocketing youth employment and policy changes that disempower our young people: changing tertiary funding and accessibility, restricting job seekers allowances for under 20s, and ongoing high youth unemployment rates.

In this seminar we invite young workers and those who advocate for them to expose the realities of being a young worker in our current environment and set an agenda for what young workers need to see from our next government.

Join the conversation with the AUT Social Transformation Research Institute and our three expert panelists:

Caitlin Wilson (she/her)
Young Workers Resource Centre General Manager
Caitlin’s passion is in empowering rangatahi, developing future leaders, and advocating for decent work. Her mahi at YWRC combining a decade in workers’ rights and her formal qualifications in education.

Kauri Tearaura (they/them)
Young Worker & OD (DEI) Leader
Kauri is a DEI and organisational development leader, youth advocate, and governance practitioner focused on fairer work, stronger institutions, and putting young worker’s voices at the centre of the ‘future of work’ kōrero.

 Tanya Ewertowska (she/her)
Lecturer in Employment Relations, AUT
Tanya’s research calls attention to young people's workplace and labour market experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand. BEL Faculty Early Career Educator of the Year, she brings that same care into classes built around her students.

The panel will be followed by light refreshments.
